INTERLABORATORY COLLABORATIVE STUDY ON LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT: FOOD AND PACKAGING SECTOR
The study “INTERLABORATORY COLLABORATIVE STUDY ON LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT: FOOD AND PACKAGING SECTOR” is a collaborative (non-evaluative) interlaboratory test created to assess and to define:
-the factors causing variability in the results of LCA studies and which of these are most significant,
-the reference value for the results of LCA studies that are part of the interlaboratory trial,
-the measurement uncertainty (LCA uncertainty) to be associated with the reference value,
-the performance of the LCA Practitioner Group in order to represent the state of the art in the execution of LCA studies,
-the performance of each individual practitioner LCA in the studies that are part of the interlaboratory trial.
The interlaboratory study will be carried out on three case studies related to the food and packaging sector and is open to all LCA practitioners who wish to better understand the factors of variability that affect their professional practice and the results of their LCAs.
The three case studies will be structured as follows:
-study on three levels, in sequence, carried out to evaluate the incidence of software and databases as a variability factor (for example: polymer – film made with the reference polymer – modified atmosphere packaging made with the film),
-single study carried out to assess the incidence of allocations as a factor of variability,
-Single study carried out to evaluate the incidence of energies as a factor of variability.
At the end of the project the following steps are foreseen:
-public presentation of results through the Final Report,
-communication of performances to individual LCA Practitioners,
-publication of a Scientific Paper and preparation of a presentation with the most significant scientific evidence of the study to facilitate a dialogue with stakeholders.
On this page will soon be available all the details for joining the interlaboratory.
NOTE: agreements are in progress with LCA practitioners considered strategic to create an Expert Group at international level. All experienced LCA Practioners interested are kindly requested to contact us as soon as possible.

The test will remain open to everyone after 21 April 2024, those who submit results after this date will have to wait until next year to receive the data.
